DAY 3: how to practice automatic writing to become a human divining rod
"enthusiastically expectationless"
This is the sixth week in a six-week series on “The Divine Download.” If you want access to the full curriculum for this series, subscribe to The Twelfth House.
Welcome to Day 3 of how to practice automatic writing to become a human divining rod. If you haven’t already, please read Day 1 and Day 2 before continuing.
I’ll keep this head note short today, because I want you to just get into the practice. Today I’m inviting you to start your session with an open-ended question (yes or no questions or demands aren’t ideal for automatic writing / drawing, as they are quite thought-terminating).
The trick here is that you must try to keep yourself from expecting a particular answer or outcome. If you’re desperate to hear why it’s so hard for you to stick to a workout routine, your conscious mind is likely to sneak in and try to take over during the process of automatic writing.
Instead, start with a question that can act as a departure point and lead you to new, uncharted idea exploration. Allow yourself to be surprised by what you might find. Try not to predict what the outcome of your automatic channeling session will be — just stay present, enthusiastically expectationless. Good luck <3
AUTOMATIC WRITING PRACTICE: DAY 3
Do what you must to bring your nervous system into a more regulated state.
Dealer’s choice, here.
Set a timer for 10 minutes.
You can write longer than this if you want, but please try to keep writing and moving for at least 10 minutes, even if all you’re doing is scribbling.
Ask your question.
Choose one.
What does my body say?
Where am I keeping myself stuck?
Where should I look next?
What would Future Me say to Present Me?
Close your eyes. Put your pen on paper and just start moving it.
Don't think about what word should come next. Don't think about whether you're doing it right. Don't worry about your handwriting.
Sometimes you'll immediately start writing words. Sometimes you won't. Neither means you're good or bad at channeling — it just means that's what happened today.
For me, it often feels like starting in media res — in the middle of a sentence or thought. The next word just appears, like T9 predictive text but from the universe. I don't know where it's going, but I trust that it will end when it's supposed to.
My only job during this time is to open myself up as much as I can to accurately receive whatever wants to come through. I can judge it later. Right now, I'm just the conduit.
Keep going til the timer goes off
That’s it! Read it back if you like. Or just go about your day.
Sound off in the comments — how’d today go for you?
