Welcome to Day 5 of how to practice automatic writing to become a human divining rod. If you haven’t already, please read Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, and Day 4 before continuing.
Irreverence is one of my personal life values because I have a tendency to take things too seriously — my constitution favors extremism. Age has taught me to sniff out my own either-or thinking as it goes down, and to gently pull myself back from the edge into softer, safer territories.
It’s easy to fall prey to self-seriousness and solipsism when it comes spiritual stuff. I love this Ram Dass quote as a reminder:
Either you do it like it’s a big weight on you, or you do it as part of the dance. When you understand the thought is the thought of the thoughtless, your singing and dancing is no other than the voice of the dharma. Singing and dancing — insurance, savings accounts, jobs, responsibilities — Shiva’s dance of life. Do you do from ‘ugh’ or do it like ‘ah?’ Do you surf through it all, or do you carry it around like its a load?
– Ram Dass
Or, as I like to say to myself 1938 times a day: IT AIN’T THAT DEEP.
So today, on this last day of our Automatic Writing challenge, I’d like to remind you to bring back a little giggle, a little hee hee ha ha, a little mischief, a little ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ into your practice of touching the Oversoul.
Relax, shake off shackles of propriety, and just let yourself have fun in today’s experiment. If it’s not fun, what’s the point?
AUTOMATIC WRITING PRACTICE: DAY 5
Do what you must to bring your nervous system into a more regulated state.
Take a few deep breaths, try a short meditation, or give yourself a one-minute body scan.
Set a timer for 10 minutes.
You can write longer than this if you want, but please try to keep writing and moving for at least 10 minutes, even if all you’re doing is scribbling.
Ask your question.
Choose one.
What idea or concept should I pay closer attention to right now?
What is the theme of this period of my life?
What am I spending too much time doing?
What should I spend more time doing?
What door do I need to open next to move forward in the direction of my dreams?
Close your eyes. Put your pen on paper and just start moving it.
You may start by scribbling for a few minutes (or the entire session). You may feel compelled to write words.
Don't think about what word should come next. Don't think about whether you're doing it right. Don't worry about your handwriting.
Sometimes you'll immediately start writing words. Sometimes you won't. Neither means you're good or bad at channeling — it just means that's what happened today.
For me, it often feels like starting in media res — in the middle of a sentence or thought. The next word just appears, like T9 predictive text but from the universe. I don't know where it's going, but I trust that it will end when it's supposed to.
My only job during this time is to open myself up as much as I can to accurately receive whatever wants to come through. I can judge it later. Right now, I'm just the conduit.
Keep going til the timer goes off
That’s it! Read it back if you like. Or just go about your day.
Sound off in the comments — how’d today go for you?
